World's Most Compact Electronic Distress Flare

Ocean Signal has developed the world’s most compact electronic distress flare – the new rescueME EDF1.

The lightweight and rugged rescueME EDF1 is 40% smaller than similar devices and ideal for a grab bag or life raft, offering a safe and long-lasting solution to visual signalling in an emergency.

Developed as a practical and cost effective alternative to the single use pyrotechnic flare, the unit can be used repeatedly in any of its four modes, ensuring continued visibility is maintained over a longer period. The rescueME EDF1 is safe to store and operate, with no concerns associated with disposal.

The light output is a beam of over 30° throughout the full 360° azimuth, providing in excess of six times more light coverage than other electronic flares. Light is also distributed throughout the hemisphere above the unit to ensure visibility from the air.

The unique lens design combined with the use of advanced LEDs and highly efficient circuit technology ensures a constant level of light output throughout the life of the user replaceable battery.

The rescueME EDF1 has four different modes of operation – Economy, High, Ultra and Forward Beam - plus SOS signalling.

Suitable for one-handed operation in difficult conditions and waterproof to 10 metres, the rescueME EDF1 has a visibility range of up to seven miles and up to six hours’ operation.

The rescueME EDF1 measures 187mm (length) by 42mm (width), and weighs just 155g (5.5oz).

Ocean Signal Managing Director Alan Wrigley said: “The rescueME EDF1 is a real alternative to the pyrotechnic flare, offering distinct advantages in operational life, safety of use and disposal, as well as cost and size.

“As with all our rescueME products, the Ocean Signal designers have developed the flare to incorporate a significant size reduction when compared to traditional flares and other electronic flares, representing a real breakthrough in the industry. In terms of hours of operation, a traditional flare will normally burn for around 30 seconds before extinguishing, while our flare burns for six hours. The user also has the added reassurance that the rescueME EDF1 is safe to use and discard when necessary, without the dangers associated with pyrotechnics.”

Suitable for use both at sea and on land, the Ocean Signal rescueME EDF1 is available from April 2015 at a price of £89 +VAT.
