World Maritime Technology Conference (WMTC) 2015

Some of the maritime industry’s leading experts will participate in two timely panel discussions on Thursday, November 5 that will be open to attendees at the World Maritime Technology Conference.

SNAME’s annual meeting and expo, the SNAME Maritime Convention (SMC), is incorporated with the triennial WMTC, November 3-7, 2015 at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, Rhode Island. Early-bird registration discounts are available until October 1.

Marine Safety and Human Factors - "Ensuring Marine Safety in the Wake of Continuing Occurrences of Catastrophes"

Moderator: Vice Admiral James C. Card, USCG (Ret.) and SNAME Fellow
Panelists: Oscar Levander, VP Technology & Innovation, Rolls Royce; Gerry Miller, Retired Human Factors Integration Expert, Kevin McSweeney, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and SNAME Member; Glen Paine, Maritime Institute and Graduate Studies (MITAGS); Andy McGovern, Sandy Hook Pilots; Zoe Goss, Crowley Maritime.

This session will discuss best practices in marine safety, where we have evolved to at this time, and the challenges and issues for the future. The focus will be on how best to apply the vast amount of knowledge from behavioral science developments to both improve safety and performance. Admiral Card originated the Prevention Through People (PTP) program at the US Coast Guard.

PTP recognized that there are plenty of regulations and requirements and the real need is to engage those closest to the problem to work the issues. He is currently Chair of the National Academies Marine Board which addresses safety and other issues before the industry.

The BW Management Panel will provide a timely and essential update of IMO's Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention and of the US regulations: exemptions, exceptions, contingencies, and challenges in implementation and enforcement of the regulations; how class societies, scientific and technical consultants, service providers and professional organizations are supporting the implementation of the regulations; and the role that technology suppliers play in meeting the regulatory requirements.

The Panel will also discuss how some ship owners and various other industry stakeholders have dealt with these challenges.
