Luxury Hospitality Announced as First Training Centre for the Maritime Food Authority

Luxury Hospitality (LH) has been chosen as the first approved training centre to deliver the internationally recognised ‘Manager in Charge for Luxury Yacht Program’, launched this month by the Maritime Food Authority (MFA) in collaboration with Highfield Qualifications.

LH will be the approved training centre for crew and superyachts based in the Netherlands and Germany, delivering the qualifications and providing annual audits for the new program in food safety management, yacht sanitation, outbreak planning and auditing.

A certification of excellence that signifies best practice, bringing food safety and outbreak management in line with other aspects of a yacht’s operation, the new ‘Manager in Charge for Luxury Yacht Program’ is the brainchild of the MFA’s managing director Georgie Mainey, an experienced superyacht chef, chief stewardess and first officer who was driven to launch the MFA due to the lack of a quality standards authority currently in place in the superyacht industry.

As the first approved training centre, LH will train superyacht crew in Level 3 Food Safety at Sea, Level 3 HACCP, Level 3 Allergen Management and Level 3 Auditing, as well as Yacht Sanitation and Public Health including MARPOL.

Managing director of LH Peter Vogel says: “With decades of experience working in the wider maritime industry, it had always bothered me that there was no available program similar to the ‘Manager in Charge for Luxury Yacht Program’ that would give captains, crew and owners the peace of mind that their yacht’s operations meet the highest of standards when it comes to the management of food safety, especially considering the fact we are entertaining some of the most affluent people in the world.

“All of us here at LH have the utmost respect for the initiative and effort Georgie and her team have taken in bringing the MFA to fruition, and we are extremely proud to have been selected as the first training centre for the program.”

He added: “Shipyards are in a unique position when it comes to instilling this new approach in the industry, so it’s vital they are all aware of the MFA and the ‘Manager in Charge for Luxury Yacht Program’. If they get involved from the very beginning while vessels are still being built, this qualification can be awarded to each superyacht from their very first voyage.”
