Superyacht Charities 7Cs Challenge

Superyacht Charities could not hold any events this year due to COVID19, so we decided we needed to challenge ourselves a little and raise some funds for all the charities that we would have supported.

Therefore we will run, ride and row the equivalent distance between the two main cancelled events - Southampton and Palma de Mallorca - in a 30 hour period on 18-19 September, covering a total of 1,121 miles (1,804km). I’m not the fittest person on earth and have never lasted more than 10 minutes on a rower!

Superyacht Charities is teaming up with onboard exercise specialists Gym Marine to bring you the first of a series of fund-raising challenges.

We are going to span the gap between our two COVID-cancelled events in Southampton and Palma in a team relay by running, rowing and riding. To make this possible, we will need to use gym equipment and this is where Gym Marine are more than just a sponsor. We will use their Broad St, Bath HQ as our base, with some team members working from home. In the final hours the whole team will converge on Gym Marine to cross the virtual finish line together.

All distances will be logged hourly onto the exercise app Strava, and the whole event will be live streamed on Facebook and on my Instagram stories. Please follow me

We aim to complete the challenge in under 30 hours and to raise as much as possible.

SYC 7Cs route 600x400The distances for each discipline are as follows:

Running: Southampton to Dover – 143 Miles
Rowing: Cross Channel + Barcelona to Mallorca – 150 miles
Riding: France, Spain & Mallorca land portions – 828 miles

“Gym Marine are the leading experts in ergonomic and stylish design for onboard gymnasia and have long been a steady supporter of SYC. They were a natural first choice when we were looking for someone to help us get this challenge off the ground and we are delighted to have them as our challenge sponsor.” - Derek Munro, Chair of Superyacht Charities Foundation.

“We are really pleased that Gym Marine are able to help SYC with alternative fundraising activities. Hopefully many of our clients will be able to use their own workout spaces to take up the challenge set by SYC.“ - Edward Thomas, CEO Gym Marine.

Once the SYC team has completed the distance, we are setting the double challenge for other teams (yacht crew, yachting companies, groups or individuals) to beat the funds we raise and the elapsed time totals between now and 28 February 2021.

There will be a trophy for each, presented at the Southampton Ball in Spring 2021 which is currently booked for 27 March  - save the date!
