A 62m long section of a 93m tall super yacht mast made an 11-hour journey from Auckland to Tauranga via the Kaimai Range on Friday.

The carbon fibre mast weighing about 9.5 tonnes, which was made by Southern Spars in Auckland and transported by Machinery Movers, was spotted on Hull Rd on Friday morning.

Once installed on the yacht it will be the tallest mast in the world. A trailer operator followed in a pilot vehicle to manoeuvre the truck through tight corners using remote control.

The section will be attached to another 30m long piece at the Port of Tauranga and shipped to Holland to be installed on an 85m super yacht.

Another mast of similar size has yet to be driven down. Lachie Whiteside of Southern Spars the mast package being built by the company was worth more than $30m and included booms that were about 25m long, he said.
