Explorer Yachts: A Whole New World

Sea+I Magazine Issue 34

Exploration yachting is fast becoming the next frontier in luxury charter, allowing guests to experience remote parts of the world that are often inaccessible any other way. The opportunity for adventure and discovery is now a reality thanks to a handful of yachts that are breaking new ground.

Sailors are often adventurers, but only a handful of luxury yachts have cruised off the beaten track, built and outfitted to explore every last corner of the world.

The 45m M/Y Latitude, built by Timmerman Yachts in 2008, recently completed a 106-day, 9,420-nautical mile journey including the Northwest Passage, so treacherous that barely more than 200 vessels have ever traversed it.

Navigating the dangerous ice packed waters between the northern Atlantic and Pacific oceans is not for the fainthearted - more people have climbed Mount Everest than have cruised this route!

Motor Yacht Legend

One of a kind is a term often used to describe a superyacht, but 77.4m M/Y Legend is different. She offers unadulterated adventure, with all the luxuries you'd expect from world-class cuisine to an onboard spa. Legend was built for pure fun and adventure and can venture through the world's most remote oceans.

There are luxury yachts, and there are luxury yachts that sleep more than 12 guests. There are yachts that have commercial helipads and there are yachts that have submarines. There are also yachts that go to the Arctic and Antarctica, but not many that can offer all of the above. Legend is the only luxury ice-breaking yacht with all these capabilities and more.

Built as a Class 1 ice-breaking ship, Legend was converted by Icon Yachts into a world class charter yacht under the project management of Verkerk Yachting Projects. Legend accomodates 26 guests in absolute luxury, without compromsing her safety and strength as an icebreaker.

Alongside technical and system upgrades, Legend has also undergone extensive modification to her exterior. The stern has been extended by 3.6 meters and has been fitted with a swim platform and a swimming pool.

The helicopter landing pad is commercially certified and a submarine is stored in the garage on the forward deck. Both are available to charter guests at an extra cost. Legend also comes complete with a gym, a Balinese spa, sauna, jacuzzi and beauty salon, as well as a movie theatre and entertainment system, a medical suite and an extensive range of water toys from paddle boards to jet-skis.

Legend comfortably sleep up to 26 guests in 13 cabins, including a Master suite, two VIP suites, four double staterooms and six twin staterooms (some of them convertible). She can also carry up to 19 crew onboard, plus 10 specialist expedition crew, for example a doctor, ice-pilot, expedition leaders and wildlife experts, to deliver the adventure of a lifetime.

Legend will be available to charter in remote areas of the world including South America, Antarctica, Greenland, the Norwegian Fjords and the Arctic circle.
