YPI Crew: Confidentiality and NDAs on Superyachts

Confidentiality Relevance 140

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Youtube and Vine. These are just a few of the social networks that keep us connected to each other and everything that’s going on in the world.

It’s easier than ever to broadcast our lives but it’s important to remember that some things should be kept confidential and out of our news feeds - especially when working on a luxury superyacht.

Working as yacht crew is an exciting lifestyle, travelling to exotic locations with some of the wealthiest and most powerful people on earth. As a result, crewmembers often have to sign confidentiality agreements to protect the privacy of their employer, and there are valid reasons why such restrictions are in place. Security and safety are paramount at sea.

At YPI Crew we’re keen to remind crewmembers that breaking this confidentiality will not only destroy the trust between you and your employer, but it might also cost you your job.  Most captains and owners are also within their rights to take legal action against the offending crewmember, especially if it leads to loss of business.

We also need to consider the world we live in, where repercussions could take a far more dangerous turn. All it takes is for a single post on Instagram to give away a ship’s location and who’s on board. When you’re travelling with some of the world’s wealthiest people, you’re a prime target for all manner of risk, including pirates, endangering the client, the vessel and everyone on board.

Don't jeopardise your safety or your job

If you’re unsure of the confidentiality rules in your employment contract, we advise that you check with your captain or management company. When in doubt, use your common sense and simply refrain from broadcasting sensitive information. As tempting as it is, it’s not worth the risk for a few likes and tweets.

At the end of a charter, many celebrities will happily pose for a photo with you, but think very carefully before you broadcast it to the world. Stick to the rules in your contract and be aware that many brands and celebrities receive an alert when unauthorized images are posted online.
