IMO Accused of "Being A Danger to the Planet"

The Republic of the Marshall Islands Foreign Minister Tony de Brum, has lashed out and accused IMO secretary general Koji Sekimizu of "being a danger to the planet" after a speech Mr Sekimizu gave in Singapore in which he refused to back caps on vessel emissions.

During Mr Sekimizu's talk, he insisted that creating caps for greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and instilling penalties for shipping companies is the sole responsibility of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and he rejects the idea that industry outsiders become involved in bringing in compulsory emission caps.

The RMI is the worlds third largest shipping registry after Panama and Liberia which makes Mr de Brum's stance all the more complicated as thousands of ships sailing under it's flag are contributing to the GHG emissions. Mr de Brum is calling on other flag state registries to join him in his campaign to lower global green house gas emissions in shipping.
