Vessel found in search for yachtsman believed to have gone sailing between Brighton and Newhaven in East Sussex

A major search for a yachtsman is under way after his wife reported him missing.

The man is believed to have gone sailing between Brighton and Newhaven, East Sussex, on his own on Sunday afternoon.

His family became concerned when he did not return home, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said.

His empty yacht has been found and was towed back to Brighton Marina, a spokeswoman said.

She said a detailed search of the area had been made by lifeboat teams and the Coastguard rescue helicopter on Sunday night, but the man had not been found.

She said: "The rescue helicopter had to be stood down because of an electrical storm, but the search is continuing."

Sussex Police said the force was made aware at 12.15am that a boat had drifted into the marina wall in Brighton.

"However, there was no one on board," said a spokeswoman. "Police are assisting with land-based inquiries."
