Cedric Seguela Launches Recruitment Arm with Sea Chef Services

Following the success of his culinary school, Secrets de Cuisine, demand from captains and agencies requesting recommendations for crew placements led founder and chef-extraordinaire, Cedric Seguela, to develop a recruitment service dedicated to yacht chefs.

Sea Chef Services is fully MLC compliant and provides chefs, yacht owners, captains and crew agents with a one-stop-shop for chef training and recruitment.

Having worked as a superyacht chef himself, Cedric left the high seas to plant his feet firmly on solid ground when he founded his successful business, Un Chef a Domicile, in 2006, providing chefs worldwide for villas and ski resorts, and organising catering and special events.

Cedric then opened a sister company, Secrets de Cuisine, offering cookery and oenology courses and corporate team-building events, out of large premises near Antibes doubling as a showroom for a wide-range of professional cooking equipment.

When MLC 2006 formalized the requirement for the Ships Cook Certificate Assessment in August 2014, Cedric saw an opportunity to return to the yachting industry by providing assessment and training for yacht chefs.

Together with partner and inimitable chef Duncan Biggs, Secrets de Cuisine is the first MCA approved training facility for the Ships Cook Certificate Assessment, and for the past two years they have been assessing and training yacht chefs worldwide, alongside courses for Food Safety and Hygiene Levels 2 and 3 for all crew involved in food handling.

“It’s been hard work but extremely rewarding” says Cedric. “We’ve seen over 350 candidates through the Ships Cook Assessment, and the pass rate at first attempt is now over three quarters. However, my biggest reward would be to see a consistent 100% passing the assessment. We had that one week earlier this season where all 10 candidates passed, which was fantastic!”

Out of the cooking school there was growing demand from captains and agencies requesting recommendations for crew placements and Cedric saw the opportunity to incorporate a recruitment service dedicated to yacht chefs. Launched earlier this summer and fully MLC compliant, Sea Chef Services provides chefs, yacht owners, captains and crew agents with a one-stop-shop for chef training and recruitment. Additional services include portfolio enhancement, a neutral venue for chefs to be tested and interviewed, and assistance with galley design and the supply of galley equipment.

“It’s a concept nobody else in the industry offers and we have all the facilities here to provide something special and unique.” says Cedric.

“My life is cuisine and what better than to help chefs develop their careers and offer them a full range of services, followed through by professionals who know the business inside-out and understand what a chef needs. By the same token, we offer employers and agents a unique, personalised service in choosing that one very important crew member valued by both owner and charter guests.”
