• Greek Coastguard Rescues 242 People off Lesbos

    The Greek coast guard says it has rescued 242 people after their wooden boat capsized near the island of Lesbos. At least three people are said to be dead - it is unclear how many were on board the vessel when it sank.

    Following a leak found on Safran on Monday night, Morgan Lagravière and Nicolas Lunven diverted to Brest where they arrived at 2330hrs (French time) yesterday (Tuesday). It quickly became clear that the state of the IMOCA 60, Safran, would not allow it to rejoin the race. The decision was therefore taken to abandon the Transat Jacques Vabre.

  • Former U.S. presidential yacht's ownership subject of lawsuit

    The owners of the former presidential yacht Sequoia are asking a Delaware judge to prevent a lender from seizing it. Sequoia Presidential Yacht Group claims in a Chancery Court lawsuit filed late last week that FE Partners reneged on a $5 million loan agreement in a "dastardly" plan to take control of the historic vessel. Washington, D.C.-based FE Partners says the lawsuit is grossly inaccurate and without merit.

    Italy's campaign against tax cheats is starting to sink its €3 billion ($4 billion) boat-building industry, industry officials say. They say that by slapping a tax on large recreational boats, targeting boat owners for audits and searching yachts moored in Italian ports, the country's tax authority caused boat sales in Italy to fall as much as 25% last year. Of course, it doesn't help that the country is in recession and that bank financing for leasing pleasure boats has all but disappeared.

    Tony Rice, Secretary General of ICOMIA has made it clear that it’s unlikely superyachts will get an exemption from MARPOL Tier III emissions targets in 2016. Instead, as he begins the final phase of lobbying to amend the regulations, he says a delay in their onset for superyachts is more likely. “No one at this stage should be dreaming of an exemption,” Rice said by telephone when contacted about the latest developments in ICOMIA’s bid to amend maritime environmental regulations. “MARPOL Annex VI was a highly political, hard fought negotiation. No one is going to allow us to cause an unpicking of that regulation.”

    The former captain of the Costa Concordia is convinced he can one day return to the helm of a cruise ship, despite being under investigation for abandoning ship and causing the deaths of 32 people. Captain Francesco Schettino was asked on Wednesday whether he still harboured hopes of returning to sea and replied “Yes, certainly”. He was responding to journalists’ questions as he entered a court near Naples, where he is fighting his dismissal by Costa Cruises, the Italian company that owns the Concordia.

    Visitor numbers were down by 8.3 per cent on account of heavy snow and ice. The 2013 Düsseldorf International Boat Show closed on Sunday with visitor numbers down 8.3 per cent to 226,300 people. Poor weather meant that many were prevented from attending the show due to ice, snow and strikes at some of North Rhine-Westphalia’s largest airports.
