Exciting Fast Motor Catamaran 40’ Lightning

Andrew Trujillo Design, in collaboration with Adam Younger Design, has just completed the exterior design for a new power Catamaran. Based on a modified fast hull originally designed by Adam Younger for a racing series, she sports a completely new, roomy, superstructure, styled by Andrew Trujillo.

Named after the twin engine, twin boom WW2 US fighter, the boat will soon be built under the Supermarine brand at the Ross-Smith Marine yard in Lymington.

The project is well under way already, with plug work now completed in readiness to start moulding.

The first of her ilk, the intention is not to make a out and out racing boat, but rather a practical fast commuter/ weekend cruiser with all of the benefits of a catamaran: stability at rest, space, speed and economy. She features two double cabins (one in the bow and one aft of the cockpit). With a heads in the starboard hull, just ahead of the starboard engine bay and access to the Aft cabin in the port hull, both cabins will also have ample storage space. She would make a great Super-Yacht tender too.

With a great expanse of curved and tinted glass, topped by a strong stainless steel handrail, and offering a sense of space and security, the cockpit will accommodate up to eight people in comfort. Featuring a semi open galley to port, a BBQ, a voluminous top-loading fridge, and a large fold out cockpit table, there will be ample space for catering too.

Several options of cockpit cover will also be available, including an electric bimini and a hard top sunshade integrated into a radar arch.

Performance will be ample, depending on drive and engine selection, either petrol or diesel, with speeds in excess of 60 knots being easily achievable, with cruising speeds in the region of 50 knots. With an easy running hull design the boat will offer practicality, speed and economy. She could have a starting package of twin 370 Yanmar Diesels. Alternatively she could have twin 450 petrol engines right up to twin 725s for very high performance. She would come with Outdrives as standard although surface drives are also a possibility.

In conclusion, we believe that the new Lightning 40 offers something new for the marine market, with an un-rivalled combination of performance and ride quality together with meaningful interior space and exciting styling. As such this new craft fully reflects the demands and aspirations of the modern day performance boating family.
