Delamination Solution to Feature at METS

Glasshape will present an answer to delamination issues in windscreens and windows at this year’s METS Trade Show.

The company, which has built a reputation on providing glass shaped to fit challenging designs on award-winning yachts, has a full range of glass products suitable for internal and external applications, including DuraShield Marine; engineered as an answer to delamination in windscreens and windows.

The key is in the manufacturing process. Designed specifically to address delamination issues, a unique, high-performance interlayer developed by Glasshape is incorporated into the manufacturing process. Overcoming the delamination typically seen in marine windshields and windows, DuraShield Marine retains clarity and high levels of light transmission.

DuraShield was the product of choice for Palmer Johnson’s Khalilah; with the end result the largest windows to be installed on a superyacht built in North America, at 2.2m by 6.6m, and weighing just under a tonne each.

“The number one issue faced by the marine industry when it comes to glazing solutions is that of delamination. Most laminates react when exposed to moisture or adhesives which, over a short period of time, leads to delamination. That delamination not only looks unsightly, but presents major concerns in terms of visibility and structural integrity.

“Our high-performance interlayer is engineered to address this. It doesn’t react adversely to moisture and we’ve tested it with the leading brands used in the industry to tip-out without any delamination issues since we launched the range.” says Richard Duckworth, Glasshape’s head of marketing.

Glasshape products are well-utilised on cutting edge yachts, including providing the impressive glass areas seen on yachts like Khalilah, Delta’s Albatross and McMullen&Wing’s Big Fish.

DuraShield marine is used for pilot houses and, when used in conjunction with Glasshape’s product Ezone, eliminates the need for double glazing which delivers significant weight savings. On Invictus by Delta Marine – the boat on which Glasshape introduced Ezone to the marine industry - the build team was able to save over one tonne of weight in glass.

Durashield Marine is suitable for both exterior and interior applications, and can be bent or curved to almost any specification. Glasshape has further compatible conductive laminates to address issues with frost and fog, bring stunning lighting into an interior or provide instant privacy

Solutions are customised to each project and configured to meet IACS requirements in a variety of thicknesses, shapes and curved and flat pieces to suit the application. All DuraShield Marine superyacht glass is manufactured to ISO 21005:2012 and tested to ISO614:2012 standards. It also meets and complies with MCA LY2, LY3 and BSMA25 and class requirements across Lloyds Register, DNV-GL, ABS, RINA and BV.

Glasshape offers a turnkey service; with everything from digital measurement, CAD design, install, certification and audit, able to be carried out buy the in-house team.
