Andrew Trujillo Design has continued the creative collaboration with Adam Younger on this new concept design, the 42m motor yacht Continuum.
She features a stepped hull (with twin steps) but on this occasion has been designed to incorporate triple water jets driven by three MTU 16 Cylinder diesels. She can also cruise very comfortably on just two engines, greatly extending her range. However, fully powered up she will achieve predicted speeds in excess of 50 knots.
The hull form seeks to achieve a balanced and efficient dynamic platform to offer a great combination of speed and handling.
The overall scheme shows a deep bow with fluted spray rails, giving good sea keeping and handling in various conditions, but also long and gentle waterlines to give good acceleration and overall efficiency.
Unusually, the hull has two transverse tapered steps, combined with multiple spray rails, the geometry of these being key to hydrodynamic performance combined with dynamic stability. This feature has also been configured to work with jet drives and actually improve the efficiency of the units.
All in all - an exciting hull form, with the potential to offer new levels of performance for the superyacht market.
Continuum features a comparatively conventional layout (although this can be customized), with the main deck incorporating a very ample master cabin in the bow, with ample vistas and a large skylight, plus all the luxuries required for the most demanding of owners (comfortable bathroom and walk-in wardrobe). Aft of the master cabin is the raised pilothouse. Beyond that is a well appointed galley. Aft of the galley is the main salon area, which can feature a formal dining area and lounge.
On the lower deck, beneath the main salon, is the guest accommodation with space for two or three cabins, depending on desires and requirements. Crew accommodation is ahead of the guest area.
A very ample sundeck above the main deck completes the vessel. The sun deck can have a complete bimini, but the design has deliberately sought to leave the deck open to the elements. Andrew says “ It seems that so many yachts have deck upon deck, making them look a little top heavy in my mind. I sought to return to the original principle of a fast motor yacht, I wanted to make her dynamic and her lines emphasize her length and add a sense of speed and adventure to it.”
Further interesting and innovative features include the aft mounted communication/radar masts, done so as to provide visual balance to the wedge shape. Another feature we sought to propose was the completely enclosed anchor pocket. This allows the hull to retain the clean lines, not only for aesthetic reasons but also for good hydrodynamic ones too. The construction is likely to use light-weight composites but one option discussed with Adam is to build her out of light-weight alloy.
The aim of this yacht concept was to take on a relatively conventional layout, and clothe it with a contemporary and dynamic design built for speed.

With over twenty years of experience designing a very broad range of yachts, Andrew Trujillo Design is a small and friendly studio. I undertake new designs and refits, interior and exterior design for custom, semi-custom and production yachts. I also will undertake other projects, from residential to transport related designs. Prior to starting his own studio, Andrew worked for a number of well know yacht design and naval architecture studios, including Azure Naval Architects and Guido de Groot Design in the Netherlands, and Evank K Marshall, Ken Freivokh Design and Tony Castro.
About Adam Younger Design
Adam studied and completed the industry respected Yacht & Boat Design course at Southampton College and immediately specialised in the powercraft markets. There were many opportunities to do original research and even now some of the work carried out on planing hull design theory is still very relevant and used. Adam’s final year thesis – investigating aerodynamics through wind tunnel testing of a catamaran gained a distinction. After leaving College Adam worked in the design offices of Souter Shipyard on the Isle of Wight where work covered craft mainly for the commercial market but also leisure, race and sailing.
On leaving Souters Adam formed his own company, largely working on contract for other boat builders. Contract work also included periods in Westland Aerospace and other areas of engineering. This actually gave a really balanced and varied background into design, processes and different aspects of business. Private marine design work was also being carried out and development work being undertaken. The race market was also becoming more important and success was soon to emerge from early designs. Work was also developing in the emerging RIB market, initially with Revenger through which the performance RIB in the UK was becoming noticed!
During the latter part of the 90’s Adam carried out various projects for the UK and foreign markets. Key spells of development included contracts leading the design office of Cougar Marine – covering raceboats to high speed patrol craft and then working in the offices of the RNLI on various aspects of lifeboat design and draughting. Race and championship success also continued for AYD boats both with Adam driving and other crews.
In recent years AYD has increasingly specialised in performance hull design working with a wide range of clients to create some exciting boats, with particular success in the RIB markets around the world. The reputation and potential of AYD continues to expand...
