Sea Service Verification on Large Yachts: MIN 543 (M)

MCA logo14

The Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) has now published MIN 543 (M): Sea Service Verification on Large Yachts, outlining revised arrangements for the verification of Sea Service Testimonials (SST) for seafarers working on large yachts.

The MCA requires evidence of qualifying sea service in support of seafarer’s applications for a Notice of Eligibility (NoE) or for the renewal of a Certificate of Competency (CoC), and as well as direct applications to MCA, this formalises authority for verification via Nautilus International (Nautilus) and the Professional Yachting Association (PYA).

MIN 543 (M) formalises this arrangement whereby all seafarers employed in the large yacht sector, whether members or not, must have their sea service verified by either Nautilus or PYA before submitting this information to the MCA, otherwise you can expect processing delays of around 160 days.

Sea Service Verification with Nautilus International

Full membership of Nautilus includes Sea Service Verification and a copy of the Nautilus Service Record Book (SRB). The SRB is administered from the Union’s Antibes’ office in partnership with D&B Services.

Non-members can now take advantage of this service by becoming a Yacht Friend of Nautilus (YFON) for a flat fee of €95 for 12 months. This includes unlimited SSTs within a 12 month period, whether you have worked as yacht crew on one vessel or multiple vessels in that time, with no late submission fees or additional charges.

Yacht Friends of Nautilus will also receive a copy of the Nautilus SRB, access to the members section of the Nautilus website, and access to the Nautilus Plus discount scheme.

Seafarers must become full members of Nautilus to access other membership services such as certificate and legal protection, and must do so before any situation arises where such services might be required.

Sea Service Verification with the PYA

The Sea Service Verification process is included as part of full PYA membership for members staying on the same vessel, or for Sea Service Testimonials (SST) dated and submitted within 12 months of leaving the vessel, otherwise a Late Submission Fee of €25 will be charged.

If the correct annual fee has not been received, membership will expire one month after the due date although lapsed members can re-join by paying the appropriate annual fee. However, a Late Submission Fee of €25 per SST and €15 per certificate will be payable on any SST or certificate issued during a lapsed membership.

For non members, PYA will verify individual testimonials on a pay-as-you-go basis, charging €50 per SST with a minimum charge of €100. However the PYA Service Record Book is reserved for members only.
