Mex has pretty much seen and done it all in yachting as well as the wider maritime industry. That’s why he’s known to most people simply as ‘Mex’. Over the years he’s served as a captain, a chief and sole engineer, a program manager, a bowman, and a crew boss, on everything from commercial fishing boats to square-riggers and modern superyachts. In the end, however, he’d just as soon be known as a simple sailor.

She may be small in stature, but that hasn’t stopped Erica Lay from doing some very big things. Only recently, Lay launched her own international yacht crew agency – the Erica Lay Crew Company – in Palma de Mallorca. But like so many, she got into the industry “purely by accident.” What started out as a "year out” working as a dive instructor in The Bahamas with a shark wrangler, turned into “a fairly grown-up job” eight years later – which seems to have come as a surprise to her as much as anyone.

Captain Pascal Pellat-Finet grew up on the crystalline waters of southern France. It was in Toulon that he started sailing at age 8. His passion only grew with age.Racing became his life. It began in the familiar waters of the Mediterranean where he was involved in the construction of the first Maxi in the Med, S/Y Halisara, and learned from the likes of Dennis Conner and Gary Jobson, to of America’s most celebrated competitive sailors, with five America’s Cup wins between them. And then it took him around the world.

Adam Laithwaite had always sailed. And when his career as head of “arty farty marketing bollocks” ended prematurely, he had to decide what to do next.“ Thanks to my friend and a few pints of quietly disturbing local village cider (which eventually got withdrawn because of its remarkable potency), I awoke one morning,” he says, “to find I had spent a large amount of money to train as a Master of Yachts with a well known British sailing company that didn’t start with ‘U.K.’”

As the master of S/Y Douce France, Pascal Goger has seen more than his share of the world’s most remote places. The 52-year-old captain has been with the 42m (138 ft) ketch sailing catamaran almost since it was built in 1998. To this day, it is one of the largest sailing catamarans on the water, and blisteringly fast – sailing at up to 18 knots in the right conditions.

Better known among her peers as "German Anni", this 15-year veteran of the superyacht industry got into it by accident. It started when Anni Riedel moved from Germany to the Caribbean, where she worked on land for a while. But then one day, a friend who did sunset trips out of Antigua needed a stewardess – and she's been a well respected chief stew ever since.

After witnessing the effects of fossil-fuel dependency on the environment firsthand, the 40-year-old Swiss founder of PlanetSolar, Raphaël Domjan, set off on what would become an eight-year mission to show what could be done with renewable energy. His goal: Circumnavigate the globe on a solar-powered yacht. He spoke with OnboardOnline recently about the expedition and what he hopes will come of the accomplishment.

Four years ago, Capt. Patrick Marchesseau found himself surrounded by a group of Somali pirates pointing assault rifles at him and his crew aboard the 88m (288 ft) French cruiser M/V Le Ponant. The ship had been en route from the Seychelles to the Mediterranean when two skiffs loaded with pirates pulled up broadside with different plans. It was 4 April 2008, and it would be just over a week before the crew and Marchesseau were released. The captain spoke with OnboardOnline about his experience with Somali pirates, the unexpected fame that came with it, and how his life has changed since.
