How many times have you served just one glass of wine from a bottle and the rest has gone to waste?
As you may have experienced, wine generally only holds for a few days before it starts losing its fruit and freshness before eventually turning to vinegar.
Some wines can hold for a few days whereas some lighter whites and very light rosés can loose their freshness after only one day.
The technology provided through the concept of Coravin has changed that. It is now possible to serve Petrus to demanding charter guests by the glass and then serve another charter guest from the same bottle a few months later!
Coravin is a simple device that allows you to pour a glass of wine without pulling the cork.- YouTube
The concept was invented by Greg Lambrecht who wanted to be able to open several bottles at one time without having to drink it all or through it down the sink. “My dream was to magically pour wine from bottles without ever pulling the cork. The remaining wine could then go back in my cellar, so that I could enjoy it again, whenever I desired”.
The way it works is that instead of opening the bottle, you push down a needle into the cork. The needle injects an inert gas called argon that protects the wine from oxidation and wine then flows through the needle and into the glass. The needle is removed from the cork and the cork reseals, protecting the wine and allowing you to enjoy it months later.
This clever little device is now being used all over the world by wine professionals, novices, wine bars and restaurants. Even the famous wine critic Robert Parker is a fan - “Coravin is the most transformational and exciting new product for wine lovers that has been developed/invented in the last 30 years, this is a killer device.”
We recommend every yacht to have one of board, so you can serve those expensive wines without wasting a thing. Coravin is available to buy on their website for around 300€ including two of the Argon capsules. Be sure to buy plenty of capsules as they don’t last too long.
